Gearbox Elevator

The gearbox system is one of the older generation elevator systems that is widely used in residential and construction projects. Let's take a closer look at this system.

What is a Gearbox Elevator?

Traction elevators are divided into two categories: gearbox elevators and gearless elevators. A gearbox elevator refers to an elevator where the driving force from the electric motor is transferred to the traction pulley through a gear. The core of any elevator is its motor, which is responsible for all the operations of raising and lowering the cabin, as the necessary force to move the cabin is provided by the elevator's motor.

Components of a Gearbox System

The components of a gearbox elevator system are divided into two categories: doors and rails, and startup equipment:

Category Components
Doors and Rails T9 rail, T5 rail, T16 rail, T5 bracket, T9 bracket, T16 bracket, bolts 8, 10, and 12, T5 clamp, T9 clamp, T16 clamp
Startup Control panel, encoder box, cabin door, mechanical arm, travel cable, duct 3 and 10, oil can, floor and cabin buttons, floor door lock, UPS, etc.

Gearbox Motor

The gearbox motor is housed in a room called the machine room, located at the top of the elevator shaft. This type of motor is older and less expensive compared to gearless motors. However, the presence of a gearbox in the motor significantly increases energy and electricity consumption, which lowers the overall efficiency of this type of elevator. The braking system in gearbox elevators uses a disk brake, and the brake pads in this type of motor tend to wear out faster. Therefore, the brake pads should be checked during every monthly maintenance session.

Gearbox Motor Brands

Gearbox motors include both domestic and foreign motors, as shown in the table below:

1. Foreign brands: Ital, Okar, Sitor, Sicor, Montanari
2. Iranian brands: Behran, Elco, Unique, ABB

Advantages of the Gearbox System

The main advantages of a gearbox elevator are easy installation, low maintenance costs, and affordable price (compared to hydraulic and gearless elevators). The speed of a gearbox elevator with a 1:1 configuration is one meter per second. Although the maximum speed of a gearbox system is less than that of a gearless elevator, it is higher than that of a hydraulic system. The components of this type of elevator are widely available due to their common use in the market and construction industry. Additionally, affordable Iran-made products are available on the market.

Installing a Gearbox Elevator

To install any type of elevator, the shaft preparation must first be completed. After installing scaffolding and applying a white undercoat to the elevator shaft, the framework and skeleton are built.
For the installation, the required height from the pit floor to the finished floor level of the first stop must be at least 150 cm. This minimum height is needed for installing bumpers and a safety space for service personnel.
The construction and preparation of the machine room must meet standard requirements, including windows for ventilation, a door with a 90 cm width and 200 cm height, which should open outward.
After completing the masonry around the floor doors and preparing the machine room, the mechanical part of the elevator begins. The exact dimensions of the cabin are measured, and the interior design of the cabin is carried out by Owjlift's design team. Cabin manufacturing takes around 15 to 30 days.
The installation and setup of the elevator are completed with the control panel, three-phase junction box, and the ground floor door.

Applications of Gearbox Elevators

Before the introduction of the new generation of gearless elevators, gearbox elevators were used in all types of projects, including residential, commercial, and office buildings. Currently, gearbox motors are mainly used in residential projects with capacities for 6 to 8 people, as well as dam elevators and cement factory tower elevators.
