Outdoor Escalator

What Is an Outdoor Escalator?

An outdoor escalator — often simply called an "Outdoor" escalator — is engineered for installation in open, uncovered environments where it is directly exposed to rain, dust, direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations. Compared with standard indoor escalators, outdoor models are built with a more robust structure, a rust-resistant chassis, reinforced sealing systems and waterproof electrical components, allowing them to operate safely and reliably under harsh outdoor conditions.

If an escalator is installed in a partially covered space — such as a roofed metro entrance or a pedestrian bridge with a canopy — it is classified as a semi-outdoor escalator. Semi-outdoor units combine the durability of outdoor equipment with additional protective canopies, and are commonly used on covered walkways and partially sheltered public crossings.

Outdoor escalators are also fitted with illuminated yellow step-edge strips to improve visibility and safety at night, and typically feature a simpler, less decorative design than their indoor counterparts. They are most commonly used on open pedestrian bridges, metro station entrances, transportation hubs and other high-traffic public spaces.

Outdoor vs. Indoor Escalators

  • Indoor escalators are designed for covered, climate-controlled spaces such as shopping malls, offices, airports and metro stations, and are not resistant to moisture, dust or direct sunlight.
  • Outdoor escalators are built to withstand rain, dust, UV exposure and temperature swings, with reinforced, weatherproof components suited to unsheltered public spaces.
  • Semi-outdoor escalators are used where partial covering exists — such as canopied walkways — and combine outdoor-grade durability with additional weather protection.

Owj Lift FES Model — Technical Specifications

The FES model is Owj Lift's core outdoor escalator platform, suitable for both indoor and outdoor (Indoor/Outdoor) installation, and part of our wider range of elevator and escalator technical systems. Key specifications include a rise height ranging from 2 to 8.3 metres, with the exact step count, incline angle and dimensions determined by the specific installation height.

Dimensions

Determined by rise height; all measurements in millimetres

CC (centre distance)

Calculated as Rise Height × Coefficient

Note: In the technical specification tables, all dimensional values are expressed in millimetres, with the exception of CC, which is a derived formula (rise height multiplied by a fixed coefficient).

Owj Lift FEH Model — Built for High-Traffic Locations

The FEH model combines advanced engineering with a refreshed design, making it an ideal choice for high-footfall environments such as metro and railway stations, airports, commercial centres and public transportation hubs. Like the FES model, the FEH is available for both indoor and outdoor (Indoor/Outdoor) installation, with technical dimensions and step configurations set out according to the required rise height.

Installation Angle & Rise Height: Why They Matter for Safety

The incline angle and total rise height of an escalator have a direct impact on both safety and rider comfort, and are among the most important factors to confirm before installation — principles that have guided escalator engineering since the earliest designs; see our overview of the history of the escalator for more background. Reputable manufacturers publish detailed tables showing the relationship between rise height, incline angle and the resulting number of steps, allowing installers to select a configuration that meets both structural constraints and passenger-safety standards.

As the use of escalators continues to grow across shopping centres, transportation hubs, pedestrian bridges and other public spaces, selecting the right escalator type — indoor, outdoor or semi-outdoor — for the intended application has become increasingly important.

Common Questions

Where are semi-outdoor escalators commonly used?

Semi-outdoor escalators, often equipped with canopies, are used in partially covered areas like pedestrian walkways with false ceilings.

Why is it important to select the appropriate escalator based on its intended use?

Selecting the appropriate escalator based on its intended use is of special importance. Choosing the right escalator considering its usage environment contributes to its extended lifespan, better efficiency, and enhanced safety.

Are outdoor escalators weather resistant?

They function like indoor escalators but have waterproof and dust-resistant features, making them suitable for exposure to water, moisture, and dust.
